Late afternoon - the usual suspects on the beach included a couple of bar-tailed godwit and a grey plover.
Two barn owls and a SE owl floated around fields beyond the church. Cresswell - Water rail crossed path to hide then later flew past snipe into reeds near sandbank.
Druridge - Plenty of reed buntings and tree sparrows on feeders, linnet played hard to photograph whereas stonechat pair were happy to pose. Warkworth - Twite on dune edge near north pier. Barn owl patrolling golf course. A chilly visit to Bamburgh was rewarded with a slavonian grebe, shag and common scoters off Stag rock plus a red-necked grebe at Monks House. Tynemouth once again provided a black redstart in addition to a couple of kestrels. And the quelea is still here!
A wet and windy outing along the coast but not that much to be seen. Highlights included a few red-brested merganser, snipe, a small flock of siskin, stonechat, reed bunting (and of course the Iceland gull still present at QEII, Woodhorn).
As previously posted, this little guy has been hanging around with the house sparrows on the garden feeders since Dec 25th (still here on Jan 5th). Hopefully it will still be around when the sun decides to make an appearance...
A quick summary of the last few days...
Dec 25th, Whitley Bay - SE owl doing the morning rounds near St Mary's. Red-billed quelea on garden feeders with flock of house sparrows (plus occasional tree sparrow). An escapee I presume! Still present on Jan 2nd - pics to follow. Dec 27th at RSPB Blacktoft Sands - Stopped here briefly in the late afternoon en route to Lincoln. Notables included barn owl, marsh harrier, sparrowhawk, tree sparrow, redwing and bearded tit. Dec 28th at Frampton Marsh - Went for the grey phalarope but came away empty-handed due to its reluctance to stay in one place! Species included peregrine, ruff, barnacle goose and black-tailed godwit. Dec 31st at Bamburgh around Stag Rock - Some decent views of common scoter and a single red-brested merganser. Male stonechat on Wynding. Finally, Beadnell at dusk provided a bar-tailed godwit. Happy New Year! |
